Lake Vista Community Centre and Neighbourhood Association (OCCNA)

ABOUT US Since 1946, O.C.C.N.A. has successfully organized recreational sports for the children of Oshawa. These programs are operated by the N.A.S.C. (Neighbourhood Association Sports Committee) which is a sub-committee of the O.C.C.N.A. (Oshawa Central Council of Neighbourhood Associations). O.C.C.N.A Neighbourhood Park association boundaries geographically cover the entire City of Oshawa. Established in 1946, the O.C.C.N.A. has evolved to provide local park clubhouses to serve the many members of our community and provides opportunities for those who have the desire to volunteer and give back to their community and more importantly, the children within their own neighbourhood. The concept of the Neighbourhood Park Association was put in place to promote those who live within a larger City, the opportunity to work, play and interact with those who live within the boundaries of their park. The park association provides opportunities for those who are new to the area, different opportunities to "get to know your neighbours" by joining local, bowling, euchre, girl guides, boy scouts, and many sporting opportunities such as soccer, softball and hockey. This concept has served the City of Oshawa well in providing those active park volunteers the opportunity to network themselves and branch out to other neighbourhood associations, therefore creating an important fabric within the community. Mount Zion Community Centre

Nestled among the evergreens at 4230 Salem Road between the 7th and 8th Concessions of Pickering is the home of the Mount Zion Community Centre. It is a gem meant to be used by and for the community as a valued local resource. Built in 1875 it was the red brick school house, S.S. 13, teaching the youth of the area until its closure in 1965. At that time the community rallied to repurpose the building as a community centre and a board of directors was formed to manage it. Through the kind donation of Arthur Latcham the building was purchased for the community as long as it is purposeful. Through the years it has been nurtured to protect the original hardwood floor, large windows, globed lighting and the charm of the covered blackboards. As well as being wheelchair accessible, it is furbished with a kitchen, washrooms, cozy heating and arrangeable tables and chairs as needed. The building will accommodate up to 100 people. It rents out for private functions at $120/day or if a special permit is being obtained the cost is $220/day. The City of Pickering helps to maintain the building and parking lot but the use and care of the centre is managed locally. For more information, please contact the Board of Directors: Murray and Evelyn Jones (905) 649-5200 mejonesy06@gmail.com Fuzz and Ruth Taylor gord.taylor@sympatico.ca Rob Carson, Paul Humphrey, John Kersten, Keith Wilson, Ken and Christe Wilson [read more]
